“Peddlers Cross looks a good thing to beat former Champion Hurdler Binocular in the Aintree Hurdle at 14:50. He went down fighting to Hurricane Fly last month, and is at least as good at this trip, whereas Binocular represents a trainer who can do little wrong through the bulk of the season, but has a lamentable record over hurdles at this meeting.”
The Grand National is the one everyone’s talking about but it’s not the only race at Aintree today. Rory Delargy talks us through his best of the rest.
Rory Delargy joins Alan Dudman for the biggest day in racing as a maximum field of 40 face the starter for the 2011 John Smith’s Grand National at 16:15. Rory has already outlined his thoughts on the big race, and those can be found here. He sets out his best bets for the supporting card below.
The Maghull Novices’ Chase at 14:15 looks set to go to Finian’s Rainbow, whose bold jumping will take him to the front when Dan Breen cries enough, and jockey Barry Geraghty’s best option is to press on early. There is no Captain Chris in this field, and such tactics will expose the speedy Starluck’s dubious jumping technique. Include him as a banker in any multiples.
Peddlers Cross looks a good thing to beat former Champion Hurdler Binocular in the Aintree Hurdle at 14:50. He went down fighting to Hurricane Fly last month, and is at least as good at this trip, whereas Binocular represents a trainer who can do little wrong through the bulk of the season, but has a lamentable record over hurdles at this meeting. He’s a bet at [2.62], and another to use as a banker in multiple bets.
The pair mentioned above could very easily be filed under the category “the bleedin’ obvious” and I’m going a bit left field for my second recommended bet. Rare Bob lines up in the listed handicap chase which precedes the Grand National at 15:25, having been pulled up when taking on likely favourite Bensalem at Cheltenham last month.
That will have most punters striking a line through his name without further ado, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. Rare Bob was bowling along at the head of affairs and saving ground with some slick jumping, when joined by Timmy Murphy on Great Endeavour with a circuit to run. Rider Paddy Flood then pulled him up, reportedly with a breathing problem. That doesn’t sit comfortably with me and the fact that Flood stood himself down with a shoulder problem immediately afterwards suggests it was jockey and not horse who had an issue.
Dessie Hughes’ gelding ran a huge race when third in this corresponding event last season, an uncharacteristic blunder turning for home spoiling his winning chance. He’s a very straightforward ride and whilst Bryan Cooper, who takes over from Flood, is not out of the top drawer, his 5 lb claim will be useful. Rare Bob should once again make a bold bid from the front.
Recommendations:
Back Peddlers Cross in the 14:50 Aintree @ [2.62] (NAP)
Back Rare Bob in the 15:25 Aintree @ [25.0] (NB)
