The extended 2m4f handicap hurdle at Huntingdon (16:40) this afternoon brings together a couple of horses that have run up quick sequences during the course of the season before the handicapper could get chance to take another look at them.

However, Just The Job is still paying for his win spree in November and hails from a yard enduring a blank February, whilst Decent Lord’s 21lb penalty for his recent nine-day hat-trick (all over 2m-2m1f) is nearly as much as he’s set to go up the weights by this weekend.

A ready alternative to both is Torran Sound, who conversely hasn’t jumped a hurdle in public since the summer but showed a lot of bottle back then to win a Market Rasen juvenile contest. Stamina and effectiveness with cut have both been further proven on the Flat since then, courtesy of a win in a Chepstow 2m2f maiden handicap, and the 10lb allowance that four-year-olds receive in this race can be put to good use, too.

Trainer James Eustace has broken losing runs under both codes during February, so yard form is of no particular concern, either.

Ron Harris has landed his share of all-weather sellers and claimers in a productive winter to date, and Local Diktator gets the nod of approval to add to the tally in Southwell’s classified claimer (15:45) this time.

It isn’t a worry that chief rival Honkers Bonkers will probably be as keen as him for a piece of the early lead, as the two diced throughout when clashing in another CD claimer last month in which the Diktat colt emerged on top despite racing off 6lb worse terms than today.

Honkers Bonkers has since won both starts with a visor deployed, but both over 7f, and Local Diktator remains the better proposition over today’s trip unless the headgear is able to inspire improvement in his old rival dropped in distance, too.
