Side Glance

Side Glance

“Fanunalter has finished ahead of Side Glance and Premio Loco in recent starts, but both had valid excuses and Side Glance is taken to emerge victorious this time.”

Timeform run the rule over Salisbury’s seasonal highlight, the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes…

Fanunalter is a tricky customer, though he’s smart on his day as he proved when landing the Group 3 Diomed Stakes on Derby Day at Epsom. There was no disgrace in his finding Dick Turpin too strong in a small-field Group 2 at Ascot last time.

Beacon Lodge was lightly raced in 2010 but showed he’s no back number when winning a listed race at Haydock on his reappearance. There has been nothing wrong with his last three runs either, but a career best is probably needed here.

Dance And Dance has been a real improver in the top mile handicaps this year, and is perhaps unlucky to have won just the once. He’s well worth crack at this level but must break on terms against this lot.

Emerald Commander isn’t’ an easy ride but was right back to his best and showed quick ground isn’t a problem when landing a three-runner listed race at Pontefract last time. He looks the pick of the three Godolphin runners.

Field of Dream beat Red Jazz in a seven-furlong listed race at Newmarket in the spring of 2010 but hasn’t quite matched that form since and looks up against it on these terms.

Frozen Power is a useful performer who was runner-u; in the UAE 20000 Guineas in 2010 before winning the German equivalent later that year. His efforts in Dubai this winter weren’t encouraging though and he has plenty to find at these weights.

Julienas is a lightly-raced four-year-old who took his form to a new level when fending off Dance And Dance in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot in June. He needs to do more to confirm the placings off level weights.

Mac Love numbered this race among his victories during a lucrative campaign in 2009. He hasn’t been able to scale the same heights last year or this, but wasn’t beaten far behind Fanunalter in a Group 3 when last seen.

Premio Loco is a smart performer who maintained a good strike rate in pattern company when winning twice last summer. He hasn’t hit full stride this year, but his latest run when behind a couple of these at Epsom is easy to excuse.

Secrecy has been well placed to win three minor events in the last year, two of them at this trip. He finished out of the frame for the first time in his life in Germany last time and this is no easy race in which to bounce back.

Side Glance took his form to a new level with a brace of listed wins over a mile in the spring and can’t be judged harshly on his latest third as plenty went wrong. He can reverse that form with Fanunalter granted a truer pace.

The Rectifier is a front runner who won twice in 2010 for Stef Higgins. He has run creditably when in the frame in listed race this year, but dominating this lot back in pattern company may well prove beyond him.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Side Glance
2. Premio Loco
3. Fanunalter

Timeform View: Fanunalter has finished ahead of Side Glance and Premio Loco in recent starts, but both had valid excuses and Side Glance is taken to emerge victorious this time.
