The three-mile limited handicap chase for novices at Exeter on Sunday looks sure to prove an informative race. Timeform run the rule over the runners…

Sangfroid is a consistent if frustrating hurdler who looked unlucky not to win maiden chase at Worcester in September (hampered up the run-in). Let down by jumping over CD since and now tried in cheekpieces.

Minella Stars was an expensive purchase following a couple of point wins in 2010. Cosily landed the odds on hurdling bow at Hereford in January and creditable third at Newbury since. Looks every inch a chaser.

Flaming Charlie is a point winner who built on promise shown on hurdling bow when running out a ready winner at Southwell (3m) in February 2010. Absent since, though, and faces a stiff task on chase debut here.

Simply Wings is a consistent hurdler, in frame on all 7 starts in that sphere prior to getting off mark in 23f novice event at Hereford in February. Needs to improve for the switch to fences to take this, though.

Rif is a winning pointer and got off mark under Rules with hood fitted in 3m Towcester novice hurdle last term. Well beaten over this CD when switched to fences on recent comeback.

Old Wigmore was successful on hurdling bow at Hereford (23f) last term and would have done the same on chasing debut but for last-fence mistake, eventually narrow second to Comehomequietly in 3m Ffos Las novice.

Another Display is a dual point winner and also successful in a novice hurdle at Taunton (2½m) in 2008/9. However, let down by jumping both starts over fences to date, and not seen out since December 2009.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Old Wigmore
2. Minella Stars
3. Sangfroid

Timeform View: Minella Stars looks the type to improve now going chasing and is bound to have been well schooled ahead of this debut over the larger obstacles. However, Old Wigmore, who may well have scored on his first start in this sphere but for idling close home at Ffos Las, is preferred. Sangfroid can pick up minor place money.
