Ruby Walsh celebrates aboard Al Ferof. Let's hope he's doing the same on Master Minded

Ruby Walsh celebrates aboard Al Ferof. Let’s hope he’s doing the same on Master Minded

“Ex-French horses have a good record in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (16:40), and the most interesting contender for the latest renewal has such a background, namely Tenor Nivernais.”

It was definitely a Ruby Tuesday at Cheltenham. If you start him up he’ll never stop, and, after winning the opener, he went on to complete a treble, including the Champion Hurdle aboard Hurricane Fly, meaning plenty of satisfaction for Walsh’s followers. Time is on his side, and Timeform’s Adam Brookes expects more big things for Walsh on Wednesday…

The final leg of Walsh’s Tuesday’s treble was on Quevega, who was winning the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle for a third time, and the next bidding to join the exclusive ‘Festival Treble’ club is the mighty Master Minded (15:20). Successful in the 2008 and 2009 renewals of the Champion Chase, his crown slipped twelve months ago, clearly not himself when only fourth to Big Zeb, but Master Minded has returned with a bang this season, looking the strong-travelling, slick-jumping machine of old as he’s won all three starts. Messrs Fehily and McCoy had the pleasure on those occasions – the latest at Ascot where the final scramble to hold off Somersby didn’t do justice to how he’d gone through the race – but Walsh is back on for the big day, and Master Minded is taken to wrestle his title back from Big Zeb, as well as putting the other nine pretenders in their place.

Ex-French horses have a good record in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (16:40), and the most interesting contender for the latest renewal has such a background, namely Tenor Nivernais. Unbeaten in two juvenile hurdles for Guillaume Macaire, before transfer from France to Venetia Williams, Tenor Nivernais has caught the eye in open handicaps on both British starts so far, and his latest third at Taunton looks all the better after several winners have emerged from the race, including Via Galilei. With such strong form behind him, and the way open for more improvement yet, Tenor Nivernais stands out back amongst his own age group.

Finally, we have the slightly lesser stage of a seller at Southwell (15:45). Alpha Tauri won a Southwell seller by half the track on Tuesday, and there’s every chance New Latin will repeat the trick for Frank Sheridan and James Doyle today. His form is well in advance of anything else, and New Latin is a similarly straightforward type in that he likes to go from the front – tactics that can and often do prove an advantage on fibresand.

Timeform 1-2-3 Tips: Tuesday March 15

There’s been more than enough talking about Cheltenham, including from me, and there’s more to racing life on Tuesday than the Festival, so let’s just get on with the likely winners wherever thay may lie….

Timeform 1-2-3 Tips: Monday March 14

I think we’re all ready for Cheltenham now. The sensible ones amongst us will have accumulated a healthily-sized betting bank for the week and the shrewdies will be sitting on some fancy ante-post prices. Some of us, however, could do with a winning treble today or it’s back to last year’s indignation of having to have 80p each way on the Coral Cup before retiring for the week……

Timeform 1-2-3 Tips: Sunday March 13

The Cheltenham Festival bandwagon rolls on, but there are just two jumps meetings to go at in Britain today….
