The ECCO Tour Championship

The ECCO Tour Championship takes place on Wednesday 15th August and once again will be hosted by a Danish course, and a new addition to the Challenge Tour at that, Stensballegaard Golf in Horsens. The most prestigious golf tournament on the ECC0 Tour, it has been based in Denmark since being introduced six years ago, with the only time it has been held elsewhere being in 2010 when it was played in Germany.

Ironically, that is the only year that a Danish player has actually won, when Andreas Hartø prevailed with an eight-under par score of 284. English players have the best record overall though, with three successes in all. James Heath and Iain Pyman won the first two stagings, while Daniel Denison proved too good last year. Pyman’s 2007 score of a massive 20-under par 260 at Odense reamains the biggest margin of victory yet, but given that the venue for this year’s renewal is reckoned to be a very tough test, with a layout akin to a links course despite the fact that it lies in the countryside, it is hard to see that sort of score being repeated.

Englishman Gary Lockerbie has been very consistent on the Challenge Tour since 2006, missing just four cuts in 24 events. His form dipped a bit in 2007 but since then he has performed well at the likes of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the Madrid Masters. Very experienced and currently top of the rankings, he is one to note definitely if taking his place in the line-up.

The Swede Magnus Carlsson needs no introduction, having turned pro in 2001, and since then has played in a number of major tournaments. His best effort this year was when third in the Scottish Hydro Challenge at Aviemore in June when he carded an 11-under par score to finish third. He lies second in the rankings at present ahead of Englishman Simon Wakefield who was actually second in the Scottish event just mentioned with a 12-under par score, but whose form has dipped a bit of late.

Local golfer Lasse Jensen may not be the first one to jump off the page when looking for the winner at Stensballegaard, but he has played a round here before when the course first opened in 2012. Currently 31st in the rankings, and not in the best of form, he could be a dark horse given that he will know what to expect of the demanding tees and greens. One thing is for sure, those that get round will know they have performed well.
