Odds on Euro 2012 Outright Winner

The strongest starts so far for teams in the Euro 2012 tournament belong to Germany, Spain, Italy, the Ukraine and Russia. Germany, a favourite to win it all this year, is tied with Denmark at the top of Group B and is sure to go through to the quarter finals. Russia came roaring out of the gate with a decisive 4-1 victory in their first match against the Czech Republic. The Ukraine was surprisingly strong against Sweden and tops the group after their 2-1 victory. While Croatia is currently at the head of Group C due to its defeat of the Republic of Ireland, Spain and Italy played to a draw in a match that showed both teams to be in top technical form. As a result, despite Croatia’s current dominance in the group, Italy and Spain remain the most likely contenders for the quarter finals.

With victories in both the 2008 Euro and 2010 World Cup, Spain may collect yet another tournament trophy this year, although there is also some danger that the team is becoming burned out. Germany fell to them in the 2008 finals, and 2012 may be Germany’s year. 2006 World Cup champions Italy remain powerhouses. The Ukraine seemed an unlikely choice for tournament winner, but they played a passionate match against Sweden. Their home field advantage and hunger may take them farther than anyone expected. Russia has also proved to be a very strong side in their opening match.

In so far as betting on the tournament goes, it is still anyones game! With the Ukraine’s upset against Sweden and the skilled match between Spain and Italy as highlights. For the teams in both Group B and Group D – the “group of death” – it’s still anyone’s game; any four of these eight teams could make it into the quarter finals. The Czech Republic fought back hard against Greece and may be advancing along with Russia from Group A. In Group C, seeing either Ireland or Croatia advance ahead of Spain or Italy would be an enormous upset.
