Walter Swinburn carries our hopes in two of the six legs
Kempton gets the nod for today’s Placepot bid, the card looking of above-average quality for a Monday.
“Getcarter’s misfortune in running over this course and distance on his last two starts hasn’t gone unnoticed looking at the market, but he’s so well handicapped by now that there’s little point in opposing him.”
14:10 – With the knowledge that there are a couple of maidens on the horizon, we’re going to plump for a banker in the first leg in the form of Shallow Bay. Walter Swinburn’s charge has two pieces of form which stand out, when second to Conduct (subsequent handicap winner from a BHA mark of 85) in the last of three maiden starts and a promising third on his handicap bow at York last time, when he failed to get the run of the race but caught the eye with how he travelled. Just a pound higher now, he’s our idea of the winner let alone a Placepot prospect.
14:40 – A few eye-catching pedigrees among the newcomers, but there’s enough substance to the form already achieved by Splash Point and Sultah to suggest one or both should see us through. Splash Point has been runner-up on both starts to date, including round here, albeit over a mile, when he was short of room in going down by a length and a half to Tick Tock Lover. Sultah emerges from a maiden at Salisbury which is working out favourably, and she was clearly better than the result that day, on the bridle longer than most and not persevered with once she met trouble.
15:10 – A tricky fillies’ event, promise abound among those with experience and a couple of the debutants making appeal, too. We’re going to need three to negotiate this leg, namely Alareen, Charleston Lady and Fourtunateencounter. All fit roughly the same bill, boasting good pedigrees and overcoming experience to make the frame on their respective debuts, Fortunateencounter achieving most in finishing just over three lengths fourth to Beatrice Aurore at Newmarket last month.
15:40 – Getcarter‘s misfortune in running over this course and distance on his last two starts hasn’t gone unnoticed looking at the market, but he’s so well handicapped by now that there’s little point in opposing him. Qalahari hasn’t always looked straightforward, but she’s been consistent when conditions have allowed and is as good a back-up option as any.
16:10 – A well-contested heat, though Willow Dancer is something of a Placepotter’s dream once he gets in the groove and is hard to leave out in such a race even if he does look a touch short in the win market. Mustakmil has had excuses either side of his third-placed effort here in August and looks the most solid contingency plan.
16:40 – A seven-runner nursery in which Jack Smudge and Picabo stand out, though the feeling is the stiff test at the trip provided by Pontefract was key to the former’s improvement when completing a hat-trick last time. As such, we’re going to bank on the improving Picabo, who comes from a yard in top form at present and should find a sharp six furlongs right up her street.
