Paul Hanagan: Champion Jockey again
Paul Hanagan was crowned Champion Jockey for the second successive year on the final day of the 2011 Flat season at Doncaster…
Warrington-born Hanagan, who rides primarily for Malton-based trainer Richard Fahey, edged a long battle with Richard Hughes in 2010 and has faced similarly fierce competition this time around from Kieren Fallon and Silvestre de Sousa.
Brazilian de Sousa closed the gap on Hanagan to four with a winner at Wolverhampton on Friday but faced a near-impossible task at Doncaster, needing all four of his rides to prove successful to claw Hanagan back.
When de Sousa failed to win aboard Geoff Oldroyd’s True Bond in the 13:25 at Doncaster, that handed the Jockeys’ Championship to Hanagan for the second successive year.
Hanagan was matched at a high of [7.4] at the start of the season in Betfair’s 2011 Jockeys’ Championship market, while de Sousa briefly traded as low as [2.34].
