Southwell saves the day again as the cold snap continues

Today’s Follow The Money movers come from the meetings at Kempton and Southwell respectively.

Our first bet races at Southwell in the 14:25, a 5f handicap, where Shostakovich has seen significant support moving from [3.45] into [2.7]. Sylvester Kirk’s two-year-old colt has now recorded two victories at the Nottinghamshire track over 6f in the last month, his only recent blip coming at Wolverhampton with an unfavourable outside draw. With cheekpieces fitted again and running off a fair mark in today’s contest, a hat trick of wins looks well within his grasp.

We move south to Kempton for today’s drifter where Fantasy Gladiator has been easy to back in the 15:10, a 1 mile handicap, moving out from [2.5] to [3.1]. Robert Cowell’s 4yo gelding has been placed in his last seven runs but only finishing first past the post last time out when running over 7f. This would suggest that the horse is not as straight-forward as one would prefer, with a 6lb rise in the weights today the current market points to another unsuccessful attempt.

Finally, we return to Southwell and the 15:25 contest, a 1 mile 3 furlong handicap where Proud Times available price has been shortened from a high of [7.2] into [5.5]. Alan Swanbank’s 4yo gelding has been tried at longer trips lately but to no avail, his last win coming at today’s track over 1m 4f. Having disappointed in his last two efforts today’s drop back in trip should suit, with a 35% strike rate for trainer/jockey combination at today’s venue the market confidence may well be justified.
