It’s the start of the jumps season proper at Chepstow
Come Chepstow’s first National Hunt meeting, come the start of the jumps season proper. And I for one can’t wait!
“Gullible Gordon looked a bit special when routing the opposition in the novice on this card twelve months ago and he looks very interesting now fresh again.”
14.20 – A familiar scene, as an exciting French recruit trained by Paul Nicholls looks set to make a successful start in Britain. The horse in question this time is Domtaline, who was placed at listed level on his hurdling bow and meets some motley rivals from the Flat.
14.50 – It mightn’t have been much of a race Karasenir landed at Market Rasen on his hurdling debut, but he was still impressive and it’s very hard to find three to beat him in this. Bank on the Hobbs runner.
15.25 – Watamu Bay is the first of a few who’ve reportedly made the switch from Charlie Mann to Paul Nicholls and the seven-year-old looks set to reap the benefit of the change of yard on his chasing bow. The opposition is made up of above-average types, though fellow newcomer to fences Aberdare has been rejected by Bangor-bound A. P. McCoy and The Shoe was a disappointment when last seen, leaving Worcester winner Balthazar King as the suggesed second choice.
16.00 – A hot race as ever, though Escort’Men doesn’t make the appeal the market is likely to suggest following last season’s potentially flattering success in the Dovecote at Kempton. With that in mind, it could well pay to take Barwell Bridge, Olofi and George Nympton, all of whom look sure to do better this time around.
16.35 – Many of these have absences to overcome, leaving race-fit Santera as an obvious starting point, though it also could be worth chancing reappearing pair Magic Sky and For Non Stop, too, the former well treated back over hurdles and the latter a sure-fire improver this season for Nick Williams.
17.10 – Gullible Gordon looked a bit special when routing the opposition in the novice on this card twelve months ago and he looks very interesting now fresh again. There’s always the chance he’ll blob, however, so it’s worth accompanying him with last year’s winner Beat The Boys and the consistent veteran Dom d’Orgeval.
